On The Passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg ~ 9.18.2020

As different as their backgrounds were, and even their approaches to judging, when it came to women's rights, Ruth Bader Ginsburg (left) and Sandra Day O'Connor were allies.

On behalf of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and the Sandra Day O'Connor Institute, we extend our deepest condolences on the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.  After serving 12 years as the sole woman on the U.S. Supreme Court, Justice O'Connor remarked in 2003, "I can still say that it matters a great deal to me to have a second woman on the Supreme Court. And it is especially fitting that she should be Justice Ginsburg, a woman who has advanced directly in so many ways the progress of women. It was a happy day indeed when she was confirmed to join our Court."

Their friendship extended off the Court as they toured and spoke together on a myriad of topics over the years.  The Sandra Day O'Connor Institute sends its sincerest sympathies to the Ginsburg family and her fellow Supreme Court Justices.

In a 2019 interview, NPR's Nina Totenberg asked Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, "Do you have any regrets? " Justice Ginsburg replied by sharing a conversation she had with Justice O'Connor on their shared journey to the U.S. Supreme Court.
